Prof. Zhang who is a professor of the USTC, China and also an entrepreneur shared his knowledge on surface imaging and geo-physics with the students of the School of Technology. Students from all the departments were seen to be attending this auspicious event. The event was headed by the Head of the Department of Petroleum Engineering, Prof. Utla Kedareswarudu and by the Founder President of this Student SEG Chapter Mr. Adityam Dutta, a student of B.Tech 3rd year from the Department of Petroleum Engineering.

 Other honorary dignitaries from ONGC-Dehradun had also accompanied the guest on his trip to the Glocal University. Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Glocal University, Prof. B.L. Raina welcomed Prof. Zhang welcomed him and had a short discussion with the other HoDs and HoS’s of the university. He then inaugurated the SEG-Student Chapter and had an interactive session with the founding committee of the chapter and the students of the Department of Petroleum Engineering; and guided them with some of his valuable advises.

To mark his memorable visit and for lending his precious time, Prof. Zhang was felicitated with a Shawl memento and a memento by the Vice-Chancellor. And thus the visit of Prof. Zhang imprinted in the association of the Glocal University with him to the upcoming days and also with the Society for Exploration Geophysicists International to the life time.

ROLE OF GEOPHYSICS

Geophysics was born as inter-disciplinary and grown as multi-disciplinary. Further, its not simply a subject, but its field. It welcomes every other subject into scope of vision and promote further. The learners and practitioners of geophysics never feel bore at any time. Its such a wonderful subject that it keeps the reader dynamic, thought provocative and provide scope to visualize.

Geophysics has been addressing challenges in the Petroleum Industry along with Mineral Exploration, Geo-scientific as well as Geotechnical issues. The scenario of Petroleum Exploration has been changed from conventional to unconventional prospects. The role of geophysics has now become multitask. Geophysics measures only surface measurements, excluding well logging. From this data, one has to infer all the complexities in geology, structures and stratigraphy of the subsurface in the form of an image in any desired plane like illuminated high resolution photograph of the subsurface geology. The surface measurements are transformed into suitable and necessary quantitative petro-physical properties of the subsurface rocks and then they are interpreted in terms of description of the rocks, identification of prospects, porosity, nature of fluid and its dynamic and static properties, reserves, production rate, sustainability and development.

 GEOPHYSICAL EDUCATION

Time to time man power is necessary to cater the needs of the Industry. Therefore Geophysical Education with hands-on-experience is necessary especially in the Institutes where Geosciences Engineering and Energy are dealt. Society of Exploration Geophysicists is providing a platform to guide the students and professional development through various student orient programs like Expert Lectures (sponsored Honorary Lectures), Field Trips, Seminars, Leadership Programs Professional Development Programs, providing literature, Video programs etc.).

Prof. Jie Zhang later discussed the benefits of mutual exchange of students and Faculty with USTC of China. Procedures will be made to get through summer internships and student project works on both sides.
